Stephen King’s ‘On Writing’

stephen kingThis is the best book about craft I’ve ever read. This despite my view that only his early books (Carrie, The Shining, The Stand etc) are his seriously brilliant ones and those that followed are in need of a serious crop. Here is something he wrote which stuck with me when I first read it: ‘Write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open – your stuff starts out just being for you, in other words, but then it goes out. Once you know what the
story is and get it right – as right as you can anyway – it belongs to anyone who wants to read it.”

He also said if you’re serious about writing you need to do it “four to six hours a days, every day….”
